Why World Leaders must allow India to join APEC

None

This November, twenty-one Asia Pacific countries are gathering in Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), one of the most significant global economic forums.
APEC represents 57 percent of the world’s GDP and 49 percent of trade worldwide. APEC includes the United States, Russia, China, and Japan, along with seventeen others.
With a GDP of USD 8.72 trillion on a purchasing power parity basis, and the fastest growing major economy, India is the world’s third largest economy, and the second largest economy in Asia.
Despite this, India is still not a member of APEC. This is unacceptable and must change.
India is a global economic powerhouse and deserves its rightful place as an APEC member. Membership will help India become more integrated with the global economy, assist in better trade negotiations, and reinforce the Indian government’s agenda to boost Indian economic growth -- all vital components of India achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Reciprocally, India would also benefit APEC members by providing easier access to India’s rapidly growing consumer market - which will be the third highest in the world by 2030 - as well as providing investment opportunities for APEC members.
The case is clear -- it’s time for India to join APEC and take its rightful place in the global economy.
