A Mentor Per Excellence
About 7 years ago, i was an undergraduate and the President of my club Junior Chamber International, Obafemi Awolowo University Chapter. Prior to attaining this position, i had two views about famous men in the society. One of them is that a famous man can only help you for his own personal benefit with wide PUBLICITY, because they are always arrogant . Secondly, I believe that all rich and influential men are proud and as a result of this, they can't relate with a common man in a positive way . These views i hold dear like a gospel truth. However, one man change my opinion entirely and mentor me without knowing it himself . As i was steering the leadership of my club, we were faced with problem of Finance with many programmes line up for the session. One of my board member wrote a letter to a very famous man without my consent. This man right from my secondary school days, i use to hear about him, but i never belief that i can ever have anything to do with him. This is because of my views that i have previously mentioned, and also with the fact that i am not from a rich family. Surprisingly, One day i was at my uncle 's place in Osogbo, as i was busy with my studies, my phone rang and on the phone the caller says he is Chief Dele Momodu. I couldn't believe it, and my thoughts was that the yahoo guys are at their work again. He simply told me on the phone that he has interest in our Leadership summit program and that he will support us financially. Infact his call and the promise he made, clear my headache about how the program will be a success. In the end, he did not only supported the program financially, he was also there in person. From his actions towards the program, i learnt three things about him.Firstly, he is a person who believes in the youth and support their cause within the context of his capability. Secondly, he is by far the only famous person I know in our nation with a real open door policy, despite been a global citizen. He relates with everybody without discrimination on the basis of religion, ethnicity, political affiliation or economic status. Thirdly, he is a very focus leader with high level of consciousness of his background. Since the the time that i knew him till today his character has never changed. He contested and lost presidential election, but that never stopped him from giving his opinions about political issues. He supports government not on tribal or religious basis but on the basis of meritocracy. Bashorun is really a man of honour, whom all youths and people in high positions should emulate. This is because, people who do not even have a quarter of his wealth lacks his features of simplicity, humbleness, industry, perseverance, objectivity, honesty, tolerance and inflexibility in his pursuit of truth.
As you celebrate your 56th birthday sir, i pray that God continue to empower you to move from strength to strength. You have been a positive brand to Nigeria and Africa at large. And for the youths, your story and achievements have been a great source of strength and encouragement to us. Happy 56th birthday to my amiable mentor. LLNP SIR
