The term Communism is a concept in political science which emphasized collective or common ownership of the means of production, as well as absence of social class. It has many proponents, but the propounders and most important among them is Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. As a theory in the field of political science, it is a social system whereby there is common ownership of the means of production and distribution . However, the focal point of the theory is on class struggle within the society. According to Karl Marx, a class can be define as a group of people holding a specific position in the process of production. Essentially, his argument is that there are two classes and they include the owners of the means of production (Bourgeoisie or capitalist) and the operators of the means of production ( Proletariats or workers). In describing the relationship between these two classes, Marx explain that their interaction is driven by exploitation, hostility and power struggle. The capitalist being the dominant class will continue to exploit the working class, but in the end, the workers will triump and establish an autocratic state which will have the function of confiscating private property. After the achievement of this objective the state will wither away and classes will no longer exist in human society. The implication of this is that , all human beings will be equal and their will not be exploitation again in the society.
Since the emergence of communism as an ideology the first person to give it a practical illustration was Vladmir Lenin in the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 in Russia. Since this period, many states also have subscribed to the communist principles and proclaim there country as a communist state . Examples of these countries include China, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos and North Korea. The problem with most of these states is that, they only adopt communism in principle , but the activities of government in these states portrays high level of authoritarianism, with a very high degree of exploitation, which contradict the fundamentals of communism as expounded by Karl Marx. Importantly, this represent a fundamental flaw in Karl Marx's theory about the goal of achieving a classless society. While Karl Marx is correct on his analysis of class and class conflict in the society, his idea of a classless society is very utopian and it is on this basis that the communist states in today's world have continued to defraud their people with communism. The fact is that, there will always be classes in the society, with its consequences of exploitation, hostility and power struggle. In the course of this struggle, there will be a winner and another class will rise again to challenge the dominant class. This is what has been produced and reproduced in all societies for several centuries. However, instead of communists attempts at establishing a classless society, the theory must be reviewed by its scholars to address the numerous problems in the world today and the communist states in particular. This is essential judging from the fact that most communist states today are among the poorest countries of the world.
